Space Defense Newsletter 2022 yearend review Space Defense Newsletter: 2022 Year-End Review From Carrier Aviation to Space-Based Defense The 2022 defense year demonstrated a continuing transition from traditional platforms toward an increasingly integrated battlespace spanning air, maritime, cyber, and space domains. The year brought renewed attention to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), the public debut of the B-21 Raider, and NASA’s successful Artemis I lunar test flight. It also reinforced a central principle of modern defense: information, sensing, communications, electronic warfare, and space-based intelligence are becoming as important as the platforms that carry them. USS Nimitz, UAP, and the Changing Intelligence Environment The USS Nimitz remains closely associated with the 2004 carrier strike group encounters involving objects later designated as UAP. The incidents involving the so-called “Tic Tac” object generated continuing debate because of reported observations of unusual flight characteristics. However, claims that the object was definitively hypersonic or extraterrestrial remain unsubstantiated. Publicly available evidence does not establish the object's actual speed, propulsion system, or origin. The more significant defense issue is the intelligence problem created when military personnel encounter an unidentified object in operational airspace. A UAP does not automatically represent an extraterrestrial phenomenon; from a national-security perspective, it may represent an aircraft, unmanned system, sensor anomaly, atmospheric phenomenon, foreign intelligence-collection platform, or an unidentified technology. By 2022, the Department of Defense was moving toward a more formalized process for reporting and analyzing UAP. The creation of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) reflected a shift away from sensationalism and toward structured collection, sensor correlation, intelligence analysis, and threat assessment. The principal question for defense organizations is therefore not “Are UAP extraterrestrial?” but “What are these objects, what sensors are detecting them, and do they represent a threat to national security?” The B-21 Raider Enters a New Era of Strategic Aviation On December 2, 2022, the U.S. Air Force and Northrop Grumman publicly unveiled the B-21 Raider at Northrop Grumman’s Palmdale facility in California. The aircraft is being developed as the next-generation penetrating stealth bomber and as a component of the U.S. long-range strike capability. The B-21 is designed to complement and eventually replace portions of the B-2 fleet while operating alongside modernized B-52 aircraft and other elements of the long-range strike force. The Air Force has stated a requirement for at least 100 B-21 aircraft, although future procurement quantities can change. Much of the aircraft's detailed capability remains classified. Claims that the B-21 is nuclear-powered or contains a compact nuclear reactor have not been substantiated by credible public information. Its known design emphasis is instead on low observability, long-range penetration, advanced networking, intelligence capabilities, electronic warfare, and the ability to operate in heavily contested environments. The B-21 also illustrates a broader transformation in military aviation. A modern combat aircraft is no longer simply an airframe carrying weapons. It functions as a networked node within a larger battlespace architecture involving satellites, airborne sensors, ground stations, cyber systems, electronic warfare assets, and command-and-control networks. At the same time, low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations are expanding the military's ability to conduct persistent sensing and communications. This does not make platforms such as the U-2 or other high-altitude intelligence aircraft obsolete overnight. Instead, future intelligence architectures are likely to combine aircraft, satellites, unmanned systems, terrestrial sensors, and other collection platforms. Artemis I: A Major Demonstration of Deep-Space Capability NASA's Artemis I mission was one of the year's most significant achievements in spaceflight. The Space Launch System (SLS) successfully launched the uncrewed Orion spacecraft on November 16, 2022, beginning a mission that sent Orion around the Moon and returned it safely to Earth on December 11. The spacecraft carried instrumented test articles rather than human astronauts. Commander Moonikin Campos, a manikin equipped with sensors, occupied the commander's seat to collect data relevant to future crewed missions. Two additional manikins, Helga and Zohar, were used to study radiation exposure. Snoopy served as a symbolic zero-gravity indicator rather than a test subject. The mission was far more than a demonstration flight. Artemis I tested the SLS launch vehicle, Orion spacecraft, deep-space communications, navigation, thermal protection, life-support-related systems, and mission operations required for future human lunar exploration. Artemis I demonstrated that returning humans to deep-space operations requires an integrated architecture rather than a single spacecraft. The program also has long-term implications for space infrastructure, lunar operations, communications, navigation, robotics, and future cislunar security. UAP Disclosure: Science, Intelligence, and Probability The anticipated public disclosure of definitive evidence concerning extraterrestrial spacecraft did not occur in 2022. More importantly, the scientific evidence available publicly at the end of the year did not establish that UAP were extraterrestrial vehicles. There is an important distinction between acknowledging that some observations remain unidentified and concluding that they are extraterrestrial. The first is an intelligence and scientific problem; the second requires extraordinary evidence. The age of the universe—approximately 13.8 billion years—and the age of Earth—approximately 4.54 billion years—make the question of extraterrestrial life scientifically legitimate. However, the existence of extraterrestrial life and the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations capable of reaching Earth are two very different propositions. It is also inaccurate to describe humanity as having only about 6,000 years of existence. Homo sapiens have existed for roughly 300,000 years, while technologically advanced industrial civilization is only a few centuries old. Likewise, the universe has not existed for “hundreds of billions of years”; the accepted age is approximately 13.8 billion years. The comparison with an ancient star having an “8-billion-year advantage” is useful as a thought experiment, but age alone does not demonstrate technological development. Evolution does not follow a predetermined schedule, and there is no scientific basis for estimating that a salamander—or any particular organism—would require billions of years to develop spaceflight. The 2022 Strategic Lesson The most important lesson of 2022 was not extraterrestrial disclosure. It was the accelerating convergence of air, space, cyber, electronic warfare, artificial intelligence, sensors, and command-and-control systems. The B-21 represents the next generation of penetrating airpower. Artemis I demonstrated the technological foundation for sustained cislunar operations. UAP investigations highlighted the importance of disciplined intelligence collection and sensor analysis. Meanwhile, expanding satellite constellations are changing how militaries communicate, navigate, observe, and understand the battlespace. The future of space defense will therefore depend less on isolated platforms and more on integrated architectures capable of sensing, communicating, processing, identifying, and responding across multiple domains. That is the real story of 2022: the battlespace is becoming increasingly networked, increasingly data-driven, and increasingly dependent on space.
